Springside Nature Reserve

Springside Nature Reserve is the flagship project of Hillcrest Conservancy, a non-profit group of volunteers which relies on public support to protect the natural environment.

Gates open daily between 07:00-16:00. 

Donations are appreciated and used for on-going conservation projects. Donations can be placed through the slot on the Resource Centre front wall, or paid by Zapper or EFT.

Shady picnic sites with braai stands, boma, benches and ablution block.

Self-guided walks:  Illustrated signboards in the parking area include trail map with flora and fauna information.

Well maintained paths:  Suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Guided Birding & General Nature Walks, with knowledgeable leaders, on the second Wednesday of each month.  Walk starting times:  October-April (incl.) 7.30 a.m. and May-September (incl.) 8.30 am.  R20 p.p. includes tea/coffee.​  All welcome.

New to nature rambling? Observe the different ecosystems; river, wetlands, riverine forest and grasslands, all habitats for the wide variety of flora and fauna, also look and listen for birds.

Of interest are the Insect Hotel and the Analametic Clock, a large horizontal sundial on the ground.

To read the time, stand on the centre line of the clock at the relevant month, e.g. July, and if it is a sunny day, your shadow should point to the appropriate hour number on the back wall.  If necessary, extend your shadow with the long stick which is usually lying loose on or next to the clock.

Directions to Springside Nature Reserve 

  • Springside Nature Reserve entrance gate is 93 Springside Road, Hillcrest
  • If coming from the south on the N2, turn off at Winston Park and cross the bridge into Old Main Road, Hillcrest.  Proceed until you reach Oxford Shopping centre which will be on your left, with Lillies Quarter opposite.
  • Turn right down Stonewall Road, which runs between Lillies and Shell Garage
  • At the intersection of Stonewall and Springside Road, turn right and proceed down the steep winding hill
  • Slow down as you near the bottom of the hill, and warn any following traffic that you intend turning left, as Springside Nature Reserve entrance is a sharp turn on the left.  It is well sign-posted.
